What went wrong with road safety auditing?
This paper firstly discusses the background context in which road safety audit has developed over the past 20 years, with downsizing and loss of skills within major road authorities. It then discusses a range of issues that have contributed to the benefits of road safety auditing not being fully utilised. These include a lack of appreciation of its benefits, the undervaluing of experience, problems with obtaining experience, inadequate commitment and the influence of road safety fads. At this point, prospects for auditing do not look bright, with the most current plans for revision of the national guidelines suggesting there will be an undue focus on systematising procedures, rather than providing practical advice from experience. The paper includes recommendations.
