Rapid Rehabilitation/Replacement of Bridge Decks - Phase III, Part I Report: Design and Construction Planning for Rapid Deck Replacement of I-59 Sister Bridges at Collinsville, AL
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) currently has over 600,000 square feet of interstate bridge decks (three linear miles) near downtown Birmingham that are deteriorating badly and will probably need replacement in the near future. The volumes of traffic on these decks are very large and the replacement of the decks will have to be done in a staged construction and rapid manner. Earlier research at Auburn University identified four rapid-deck replacement systems that could be viable candidates for the Birmingham bridges. These systems are: Exodermic steel grid panels with cast-in-place (CIP) concrete topping; Standard steel grid panels with CIP concrete topping; Exodermic steel grid with precast concrete panels; and Modified National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) precast concrete deck panels. In addressing the Birmingham deck replacement work, a question which must be answered is: "What are the construction friendliness, required traffic disruption times, projected service lives, and costs of the viable deck replacement systems and schemes identified above?" It was decided by ALDOT engineers and Auburn researchers that the best approach to address this question was to place a field "test bridge" with the above four rapid deck replacement systems being employed on different spans of the bridge. Sister I-59 bridges over SR68 at Collinsville, AL were selected to serve as the rapid-deck replacement "test bridge". The objective of the research reported on herein was to develop the design and construction sequences and procedures for each of the four rapid-deck replacement systems identified above for the Collinsville, AL "test bridges."
