A LIGHTWEIGHT WHEEL SET FOR HIGH SPEEDS IN THE CASE OF THE WHEEL/RAIL SYSTEM
EIN LEICHTRADSATZ FUR HOCHGESCHWINDIGKEITEN IM RAD/SCHIENE-SYSTEM
Higher speeds necessitate a reduction in non-suspended masses. In the case of hollow axle-shafts, the press-assembly method, used up to the present, is not very durable. Theoretical research and experiments with models enabled a bonding technique to be developed, and experimental wheel sets to be built. Up to the present, they have covered a distance in excess of 150,000 kms., without any damage to the bonded connection. The new lightweight wheel set will be provided, in addition, with wheel centres made from lightweight materials, or thin laminated plate. Wheel treads made of steel or lightweight metal will also be bonded.
