THE GERMAN FEDERAL RAILWAY'S WHEEL SETS FOR HIGH SPEEDS
WAGENRADSTZ DER DEUTSCHEN BUNDESBAHN FUR HOHE GESCHWINDIGKEITEN
Wheels used on rail vehicles are subjected to considerable strain, because of the higher speeds, in the case of passenger coaches, and the use of wheels of small diameter in the case of goods wagons. The German Federal Railway has carried out experiments with wheels made of different materials on vehicles provided with brake blocks and disc brakes. In this connection, use is to be made, for the wheels, of an unalloyed carbon steel, having a carbon content of less than 0.5%, as well as of tempered wheel treads. The wheel discs are to be provided with slight undulations, thin treads, and the smallest possible amount of turn. The tread is to have a profile similar to that of the DB II.
