RESTRUCTURING FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION IN CHICAGO
Five hundred million tons of freight traffic enter, leave, or pass in transit through, the Chicago area each year. The above article contains details of a report on the restructuring of the existing transport system. The rail system would include a smaller number of marshalling yards, as well as of radial penetrating tracks, and lines, and high-speed services, which ultimately, would be electrified. Wide inter-modal corridors would be used for penetration purposes. The installations for inland-waterway traffic, and the residential areas in proximity to the inland-waterways, would be restructured. Congestion in the business centre would be relieved, without any reduction in its activities, by a more efficient arrangement. The above article contains a brief explanation, as well as a commentary and justification, of these arrangements.
