PROBLEMS OF FIVE-STOREY UNDERGROUND STATION IN TOKYO

To ease suburban traffic congestion in the Tokyo metropolitan area, which is aggravated by urban sprawl, quadrupling of tracks has been going on in five directions radially from the city centre, on the Japanese National Railways 3 ft 6 in. gauge Tokaido, Chuo, Tohoku, Joban and Sobu Lines, under the first, second and third five-year plans since 1957 and the ten-year plan started in 1969. The Chuo, Tohoku and Joban Lines projects are already complete, greatly helping to alleviate congestion.
