Automotive Emergency Call and Ng (Next Generation) - 911

US traffic accidents are characterized by high fatality rates on “rural roads”, “night-driving” and in “one-car crash” scenarios, where quick rescues can reduce fatalities. Currently private emergency support services for example OnStar, are providing emergency support service for fatality reduction. Also, the US government started the NG-911 initiative. With this initiative, the 911 system, which accepts only voice calls, will be upgraded to accept various types of calls, mails and messages, so data from ACN (Automatic Collision Notification) initiated by airbags or vehicle sensors can be automatically transmitted to a PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point), i.e. police, ambulance or fire station. Also in Europe, eCall (emergency call) is being discussed. In this paper, the authors first address traffic crash statistics and emergency call statistics. Then they introduce both telecommunication and automotive technologies associated with NG-911. Finally, they address challenges for NG-911 deployments, i.e. PSAP’s emergency call reception capability, regional non-uniform NG-911 during the transition term and others.
