Evaluation of HMI for Motorcycle

The authors have been proposing that a simple device is more advantageous as a means for providing information (Human-Machine Interface) to help safe riding of motorcycles because of its installation flexibility and its visibility with peripheral vision. In this study, the authors examined the influences from providing the information by comparing a simple-indicators device and an iconic-representation device. Measurements were performed with the dual-task method in which a vehicle-following task, designed for motorcycle based on the acceleration-pedal-operation tracking method for four-wheeled vehicles, and the collision avoidance task were presented by using Honda Riding Trainer (RT). The results showed that the precursor notification made it possible for a rider to make quicker response and the simple-indicators device provided better results in the vehicle-following task. Though it was carried out under one measurement condition for this time, the results proved the advantage of the simple-indicators device when compared to the iconic-representation device.
