Commuters strike back!
The use of rideshare smartphone apps is growing. In Europe, ridesharing apps tend to match drivers and passengers with similar destinations who want to share costs, while in the United States, ridesharing drivers are usually paid. The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit strikes in the summer of 2013 caused a major increase in the use of rideshares in the region. Transit disruption in both Europe and the United States has led many commuters to turn to ridesharing. In the United Kingdom, travelers during London tube strikes have also been helped by Transport Buzz, a program that searches social media for travel advice.
