Pattern Analysis of Road Traffic Information for Utilization in VICS-FM Multiplex Broadcasting
The Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) provides road traffic information (VICS information) to road and traffic managers and to drivers. The VICS Center uses FM multiplex broadcasting to distribute VICS information, but since there are limitations on the bandwidth that can be used in FM multiplex broadcasting, information of lower priority is deleted when necessary. At present, these priorities are the same across the board under all circumstances. The aim is to provide drivers with more useful information in the future by defining a number of patterns for priority control tables that are used in broadcast program editing, and switching among these patterns according to actual conditions. In this way, useful information applicable to conditions could be provided. This paper reports on the first steps toward that aim in the form of results from analysis of road traffic information trends from spatial and temporal perspectives, and the possibilities for making multiple priority control tables.
