Atrial Fibrillation Presented with Syncope in a Jet Pilot During Daily Briefing on Squadron
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of arrhythmia, but is rarely seen in healthy young pilots. Syncope, or fainting, can be one of the initial symptoms associated with AF, but is also rarely observed in healthy pilots. Although benign on the ground, it has great potential for in-flight incapacitation and loss of aircraft control. This medical case report describes a 23-year-old male jet pilot with sudden syncope during a daily flight briefing. The diagnosis was AF. The pilot was temporarily grounded but was able to return to flying duties after three months with no recurrent arrhythmia.
