The Intelligent Transport Systems Strategy of the Future Korean Expressway
Freeway Traffic Management System (FTMS) was introduced by Korean Expressway Corporation in 1993. Since then, Korean Expressway Corporation has been promoted the system deployment and service expansion. This can perform traffic management through all expressway routes and operate electronic payments using DSRC (Dedicated Short Rang Communication) at all tollgate. Recently, roadside equipments that are DSRC-based were built on all route then, they prepare service environment of vehicle-infrastructure communication. Recent domestic and international intelligent transportation systems (ITS)-related projects are developing the cooperative ITS system by using the wireless communication between vehicle and infrastructure or between vehicle and vehicle, and National ITS Master Plan 2020 was established that was proposed direction of ITS next 10 years. Accordingly, Korean expressway reached a point that requires a review of the expressway ITS services to changes in technology and changes in national policy, to be in harmony. For establishment of Expressway ITS master plan for the next 10 years to meet the needs of operators and users, first of all, domestic and international ITS-related projects and technology are reviewed to reflect expressway ITS master plan.
