Effectiveness of Speed Recovery and Lane Utilization Information at an Expressway Bottleneck
The section of Yokohama-Machida Interchange (IC) and Atsugi IC on the Tomei Expressway (east bound) frequently causes heavy traffic jams due to the heavy traffic demand entering Tokyo metropolis. Because the bottleneck is located near the Yamato Tunnel, it has been difficult to take care for the bottleneck like adding an extra lane. Thus, the dynamic information regarding the speed recovery and lane utilization was planned to provide. The plan is to provide such information by the variable message signs (VMS) system in the condition just before and during a traffic jam, and those conditions are automatically analyzed by the data collected by vehicle detectors. This research focuses on the effectiveness of the information to alleviate heavy traffic jams and enhance traffic condition of the section. The result was the information affects drivers on changing from the densest lane to the sparse lanes as well as increasing the average speed in this section.
