Evaluation of InSync Adaptive Traffic Signal Control in Microsimulation Environment
This study compares InSync adaptive traffic control logic to three conventional Time-Of-Day (TOD) signal timing plans in a virtual reality of a microsimulation model. This study investigates a comprehensive set of performance measures, including environmental metrics, by evaluating performance of InSync on a segment of SR 421—a 12-intersection corridor in Volusia County, FL. The VISSIM model of SR 421 was carefully calibrated and validated to resemble field conditions. Each of the scenarios is simulated multiple times and the results are tested for statistical significance. The findings show InSync outperforms TOD signal timings’ traffic efficiency in this network. Savings vary between 2-20% depending on the performance measure and time of day. Side-street delay is an exception where InSync does not always outperform TOD signal timings. InSync also outperforms TOD signal timings in environmental factors, but sometimes pays the price of enabling more efficient traffic operations than the TOD plans.
