Employment of Dynamic Parking Lot Vacancy Information System in a Circuit Style Rest Area
Since the significant success of the Parking Lot Vacancy Information System (PaLVIS) installed in a rest area on the Tomei Expressway in Japan, NEXCO-Central employed the system in all the rest areas on the Shin-Tomei Expressway newly opened in April 2012, to help drivers to find out an available parking lot. The effectiveness of PaLVIS information in a Shin-Tomei rest area was evaluated, because these rest areas contain the circuit style in the passenger parking areas that is unique design concept in Japan. This evaluation resulted that drivers tend to leverage the vacancy information while they choose an aisle at a bifurcation, and approximately 80% of the drivers noticed and utilized the parking lot vacancy information delivered on a PaLVIS display.
