Accuracy of Travel Distance Calculation Based on GNSS Technology
A device and corresponding methodology for calculating the travel distance of individual vehicles is necessary for implementing travel demand management measures, providing incentives or disincentives to drivers based on vehicles’ travel distance from the perspective of mitigating urban traffic congestion and preserving energy resources and the natural environment. This paper presents the results of a fundamental experiment conducted in Japan to examine the accuracy of calculating vehicle travel distance based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology by several methods using different devices, such as smartphones and an on-board unit compatible with intelligent transportation system (ITS) Spots. Some possible factors influencing travel distance calculation, such as driving behavior, have also been examined in the experiment.
