Barriers to life jacket use among adult recreational boaters
This study uses a cross-sectional survey to examine barriers to life jacket use among recreational boaters in Washington State. The authors examine survey data of adult boaters on motor boats <26 feet long between August and November of 2008. Their findings show low or no life jacket (0% to 50%) use to be associated with longer boat length, alcohol use, feeling that life jackets are uncomfortable, confidence in swimming ability, and possible distrust in life jackets' life-saving abilities. Increased life jacket use is found to be associated with a child being onboard, completion of a boating safety course, and an inflatable life jacket being the primary life jacket used. The authors suggest that more comfortable life jackets, an awareness of their life-saving efficacy and boater education classes may lead to increased use of life jackets among adults.
