Introduction to Intelligent Systems in Traffic and Transportation
As not only one of the pillars of modern economic systems, urban mobility is also a key issue in the quest for equality of opportunity, once it can improve access to other services. However, especially in mega-cities, there are currently a number of negative issues related to traffic. Some examples of these are economical issues (cost of opportunity caused by delays), environmental (externalities related to emissions of pollutants), and social (traffic accidents). Increasingly, the answers to these problems are closely tied to information and communication technology. This book aims to give a broad introduction into the basic concepts relevant to transportation systems, in order to foster cooperation among the involved communities, targeting practitioners and researchers from information technology and computer science. Additionally, a panorama of some of the most exciting and newest technologies is offered in the second part of this book, originating in computer engineering and computer science. These are now being employed in projects that relate to interconnected vehicles, car-to-car communication, platooning, car navigation, sensor networks, and crowd sensing, among others. Engineers and researchers from the transportation and traffic community are the intended audience.
