Bike sharing systems: part of public policies on sustainable mobility
Bike sharing systems (BSS) have become a feature of the French urban transport scene. Fifteen years after the first automated BSS in Rennes was put into service, it is time to take stock of this service in French cities, to assess the factors for success and failure in France and to put forward some lines of thought about how it might develop in the coming years. Firstly the authors offer a detailed report on self-service bicycle schemes in France. The qualitative and quantitative assessments present the different principles for implementation in France. Secondly the authors provide some answers to explain the differing degrees of success observed, especially according to the size of the urban area or the characteristics of the services provided and results on use of the service. Finally, based on trends observed in France and abroad, the authors will sketch out a possible future for self-service bicycle schemes.
