Toward smart active road studs for lane delineation

This article reports a driving simulator study, conducted within the framework of a European project devoted to developing intelligent road lighting applications. The experiment examined simulated night-time driving on a country road, with our prototype design for the project’s Active Lane Delineation application, compared to an unlit road. The analysis showed small variation in speed, with slower speeds inside relative to before the curves, and with the studded condition inducing slightly faster speeds than the unlit condition, but neither in the introductory sections leading to curves not inside the curves. The lane positioning results showed that the participants drove near the lane centre in both road conditions, with the unlit condition inducing greater lateral variability than the studded condition, in both right and left curves, demonstrating better lateral vehicle control with the studs, as compared to without them. At a subjective level, the participants perceived the studded road as safer, more comfortable and allowing better control than the unlit road. Future directions are discussed.
