Cab and system design influence on metro drivers' performance: preliminary study
Potentially safety-threatening scenarios in metro system operations can be directly related to driver behaviour. The risk of collisions on metro systems is very low but incidents can still occur leading to passenger injuries and significant service disruptions. The literature shows there is a gap in research focusing on drivers’ performance in metro systems. Nevertheless, there is significant potential in assessing the impact of performance shaping factors (PSF) such as cab and system design on drivers’ performance. Inter-dependencies of PSFs are also relevant. Identifying how PSFs affect drivers, both directly and through other PSFs, will allow the development of mitigation measures in order to improve the safety of metro systems. This paper provides a comprehensive literature assessment and preliminary analysis provided by a middle sized metro system located in the European Union. Research activities include analysis of incident reports data as well as interviews with drivers and managers with a main focus on cab and system design features.
