NCHRP PROJECT IN PROGRESS: Framework for Making Safe Transportation Decisions: Seven Principles for Prioritizing Safety
In this article, the authors present seven tested, practical principles derived from an National Cooperative Highway Research Program project in progress to help states to incorporate transportation safety considerations and implement measures throughout the planning process. The seven steps are: establish multidisciplinary coordination with transportation and safety stakeholders; incorporate safety into the vision, goals, and objectives; develop safety performance measures and targets; collect and analyze crash data; make safety a decision factor; monitor and evaluate transportation safety; and include safety in planning programs and documents.
