SOU YARD IS ON LINE

Southern's new mini-computer controlled 32-track classification yard at Sheffield, Ala. is humping about 1,800 cars daily and will eventually classify up to 2,400 cars daily. Five Nova 1200 minicomputers provide process control, management information and backup capability at this $15 million facility. Via Southern's microwave, the minicomputers are tied to the main computer complex in Atlanta. The main MIS computer in Atlanta provides classification track information to Sheffield, including advance train consist data to help in planning yard operations. General Railway Signal Co., the prime contractor, also provided the major hardware items such as power switches, retarders, hump locomotive controls and other associated control systems.
