MOTOROLA SUPPLIES RADIO SERVICE TO AMTRAK

A new, multi-frequency two-way radio for locomotive application is helping to keep AMTRAK trains on schedule along with considerable savings in operating costs. Amtrak with 21 passenger routes running on as many as three different railroads each with different road and dispatcher radio frequencies, faced the task of creating a workable communications network. With 16 railroads and approximately 25 frequencies involved, the job was complex. The total number of radio frequencies needed on a given route was determined by the number of frequencies involving individual railroads which the Amtrak routing would cover. In most cases, to permit additional flexibility, frequency assignments were made to permit operation over several routes.
