HOT AIR MELTS SNOW ON CP RAIL

In its western mountain territory and heavy snow belt area, CP Rail has gone to a bungalow concept for housing switch heaters, their controls and an electric generator (where no ac power is available). The entire installation, costing about $6,000 to equip the power switch end of a siding in traffic control territory, has kept switches free of snow and ice. The first two units, installed in Albert Canyon, British Columbia, have been so successful that CP Rail is installing 35 more snow melters this year. Modifications have been made to the Rails Co. melters, and to building design and construction resulting from on-sight inspections by men from CP Rail and the manufacturer.
