IMPROVED MAGNESIUM DESCALING SYSTEM

The use of inhibitors to stop tank corrosion may cause unacceptable contamination of the stored liquid; changing the material of construction from steel to reinforced plastics is often impossible, as in the case of a ship. It is often preferable to allow a tank to become corroded and then to remove the scale at regular intervals. If an anode of greater electronegative potential is introduced into such a system, then all corrosive activity is diverted to it while the tank structure becomes the cathode. It not only ceases to be corroded, but scale already formed on it tends to be shed. The most effective anode material for this rapid descaling technique is magnesium. The ribbons are installed by distributing each length as evenly as possible around the tank to be treated and then clamping the ends to convenient structural points.
