Washington metro masterplan gathers Momentum

Washington, DC's Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is under increasing pressure to cope with the demands of a growing city, nearly half a century after its first metro line opened in the US capital. This article takes a look at how WMATA is looking to build a foundation for future expansion after years of underinvestment. Momentum is the name of its 2013-2025 strategic plan, which sets out how the system can keep pace with future projected growth. Implementing investment proposals of around $UA 6bn across all modes by 2025 will eliminate severe overcrowding on Metrorail and provide adequate capacity through 2040. There are also two sidebar articles which highlight 1) the opening of Metrorail's new Silver Line, the first expansion of the system in nearly 10 years, whose primary objective is to bring Dulles International Airport and western districts onto the network; and 2) the first phase of a proposed eight-line system for light rail, with the return of street cars or trams to the Nation's Capital (although no official opening date has been disclosed as of yet).
