Assessment of road infrastructure condition

Road authorities are continuously trying to increase road maintenance efficiency and reduce its related costs. Consequently outsourcing of road maintenance activities in open markets has been used as a strategy in order to increase maintenance efficiency. Such a strategy requires a systematic assessment of road conditions and its’ components to evaluate the fulfilment of the contracts. For many of the road components, reliable condition assessment method is still not developed. This paper presents a result of a study conducted by the Swedish Transport Agency aiming at evaluating a method for condition assessment of different road components, such as road barriers, pavements, roadside slopes and ditches. The equipment which is used in this study is called Sector Profile Scanner which is a medium range laser scanner used for high accuracy measurements of areas and elements within a range of 10 meters. The field studies are conducted in Sweden along 7 road sections with different characters. The method evaluation is focused on aspects such as the technical performance, cost efficiency, number of scanned road components and the ability to illustrate and analyse the results.
