THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF RAILROAD FACILITY CONSOLIDATION
It is the thesis of this article that there exists a significant misallocation of the railroad industry's financial resources, and the Chicago region's land, to underutilized switching yards. Industry consolidation of switching operations could aid in the elimination of these yards. The potential benefits of facility consolidation were determined in the study, and a method of quantifying the cost of any possible misallocation was derived.
