Cold Weather Concreting Strategies
The cost of concrete construction in cold weather can surpass the cost of ready mixed concrete. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has documents detailing specifications and recommendations for placing concrete on cold surfaces. The ACI documents recommend that surfaces should be above the freezing temperature of water and should be close in temperature to the concrete in order to avoid cracking and other issues. Strategies for cold weather concreting fit into two categories: placing concrete against cold formwork and against cold embedments. ACI has standards and recommendations for both strategies and has been doing further work in measuring the effect of cold subgrades on concrete placed on ground.
