Securing the Safety of Navigation in East Asia: Legal and Political Dimensions
Most international trade in East Asia takes place on the ocean, making safe navigation an important topic for this region. The booming economies in countries such as China and Vietnam put extra pressure on sea lanes and navigational safety. This book identifies issues and explores the practical implications for the safety of navigation in East Asia. Topics include transnational crimes such as sea piracy and maritime terrorism, environmental security and search and rescue at sea. The book is divided into four sections: an introduction to the topic and the search for a cooperative mechanism; the international legal framework; national perspectives on the safety of navigation from scholars from South Korea, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines; and navigational issues in the South China Sea, a critical sea route for maritime transportation.
