MINE RAILWAY IN MAURITANIA--9YEARS OF OPERATION BY MIFERMA
UN CHEMIN DE FER MINIER EN MAURITANIE--9 ANS D'EXPLOITATION DE MITERMA
The author, Assistant General Manager of the Mauritania Iron-Ore Mining Company (MIFERMA), saw the construction of the 650 km long railway from Zouerate iron-ore mines to the port of Nouadhibou. In an article in the November 1961 RGCF, he described the design of the line, the type of track adopted, the rolling stock, the terminals, the workshops and the operating conditions. In this article, in the light of 9 years' experience, he refers back to these various headings and explains the changes that have had to be made which are quite extensive in some cases. At present a certain degree of stabilization has been achieved, particularly in the fight against the main energy: the sand. The results obtained--increasing tonnage conveyed and unchanged transport costs--augur well for the development programme now in hand which, among other improvements, will increase the transport capacity by 25% in 1973.
