DEVELOPMENT OF THE FRENCH RAILWAYS OVER THE PAST FIFTY YEARS

EVOLUTION DES CHEMINS DE FER FRANCAIS DANS LES CINQUANTES DERNIERES ANNEES

It is in fact the history of the French Railways since 1922 that Mr. Guibert, General Manager of the SNCF, retraces on the occasion of the UIC Golden Jubilee. The author mentions the considerable ground covered in this period which opens just after the First World War, and he dwells firstly on the organic changes made to the former Companies that led to the creation of the SNCF. He considers the legal status of the Railways, their relations with the State as provided for in the 28 June 1921 convention, then the 31 August 1937 convention (SNCF) and finally the current reform featuring the autonomous management of the SNCF with all its consequences. The author then reviews briefly the changes in the length of line operated, institutions of all types, means of traction, personnel and staff strength, passenger and freight transport (traffic, speed, vehicle stock), and productivity. The situation of the railway in the French economy is then considered. In conclusion, the author provides some statistical data on increased output and improved services, showing that the future can be contemplated with some optimism.
