A YEAR'S OPERATION OF TURBOTRAINS (PARIS-CHERBOURG-DEAUVILLE)
UN AN D'EXPLOITATION DES TURBOTRAINS (PARIS-CHERBOURG-DEAUVILLE)
The authors, who are respectively Chief Operating Officer and Chief Rolling Stock and Motive Power Officer of the SNCF Western Region, describe the results of the experimental operation of trainsets fitted with aviation gas-turbine engines (EGT) on Paris-Cherbourg and Paris-Deauville services. They explain why these power units and routes were chosen and give service performance and statistics which place emphasis on the great value of this solution. Benefits derived are also improved services on the lines with higher frequency, better speeds (maximum permitted speed now 160 km/h), more transport capacity and greater standard of service. Traffic has risen to a marked degree.
