THE STEF-TRANSPORT AND WAREHOUSING OF PERISHABLES
LA STEF-TRANSPORT ET ENTREPOSAGE DES DENREES PERISSABLES
The author outlines the history of railway subsidiary companies forwarding perishables by rail. The STEF (Societe Francaise de Transport et d'Entrepots Frigorifiques -- French Transport and Coldstore Company), formed in 1937 at the same time as the SNCF, has taken over all these companies; the author explains its organisation, lists its French and foreign subsidiaries, defines the main aspects of its policy directed to two principal activities, transport and warehousing, to which are added those of a consultant and a manufacturer of ice for its own requirements. The author then gives details of the transport units the Company operates (wagons, lorries, delivery vans, containers), lists the main categories of perishables conveyed, provides some statistical data and deals in conclusion with its coldstore, ice manufacture and consultant activities.
