MINICOMPUTER CONTROLS UP YARD

The above article contains a description, as well as details of the method of operation, of the Union Pacific's Los Angeles East marshalling yard, which is completely controlled by a minicomputer. The latter controls marshalling operations on 16 formation tracks, giving an output of some 500 wagons per day. The installation includes a control unit and a teleprinter, and operates the points for sorting purposes, in accordance with destination, controls the two-stage retarders, as well as the capacity of the formation tracks, verifies the clearing of the points, and controls the shunting speed. The installation is designed for the automatic identification of vehicles.
