CAPWAP Analysis of Deep H-Piles through Waste and Soft Clay
Pile foundations are to be used for a development project at the margins of the San Francisco Bay above approximately 30 feet of debris fill and municipal solid waste, 200 feet of soft clay, and stiffer underlying alluvium. The first building planned for construction would require piles on the order of 230 feet long, tipping out in the alluvial clays and sands. To optimize the axial capacity of these piles and provide insight into future development at the site, the authors designed and oversaw a pile load testing program. The test program consisted of 16 piles, 12 driven to final depth during initial driving and four left at shallower depths to allow for better evaluation of shallow pile capacities. A pile-driving analyzer was used to evaluate driving conditions and to provide input for case pile wave analysis program (CAPWAP) capacity analysis under initial driving conditions and restrike conditions approximately three weeks later. The testing program allowed for optimization of pile capacity with pile section and provided verification of the general soil stratigraphy across the proposed building footprint.
