ASPECTS OF ELECTROCHLORINATION

The Cychlor plants, designed and produced by Cumberland Engineering to provide sodium hypochlorite for the sterilization of sea water in the circulating water system by on board electrolysis of sea water, operate on raw sea water feed and are compact, automatic units. The electrolyzer has a cell with gaps made small to minimize the sea water ohmic resistance and with a water velocity maintained at a high level to remove hydrogen and magnesium hydroxide. The electrolyzer is run at the highest convenient temperature, in the range 20 to 45 C, to deoxygenate the water and to reduce its ohmic resistance. Details are given for types of fouling caused by sea water, flow through the system, and checking the chlorine content.
