LINEAR-MOTORIZED YARD AUTOMATION SYSTEM
Since 1965, studies have been carried out by the Japanese National Railways, with a view to the development of the automatic operation of marshalling yards, by means of the use of different devices propelled by linear motors. Some Some of the studies carried out have resulted in practical applications, involving the following units: type L2, an accelerator, which is able to carry out the automatic shunting and despatch of a rake of wagons; type L4, a shunting and braking unit, which is placed between the rails, and moves automatically on a track, thus enabling one wagon to be coupled to another; type L6, an electromagnetic retarder, placed halfway between the hump and a sorting siding, which regulates the speed of a wagon at the approach to the siding. A complete set, including units L4 and L6, was brought into service, in 1970, as an experiment, in Toyama marshalling yard.
