Planning Major Infrastructure: A Critical Analysis

The policy and planning world of major infrastructure, as it is now moving in the UK and Europe, is analyzed in this book. It tackles the ways in which some countries have managed to generate genuine consensus on how the large changes are progressing, as well as the ways in which lessons can be learned from the different ways countries manage these changes, so as to better inform spatial planning and steer politics in a more intelligent manner. France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and Spain are featured in case studies, which include different regimes introduced in Wales, Scotland and England, brought in by reforms since 2006. The issues of high speed rail, renewable energy deployment, waste treatment and water management are covered. Securing democratic legitimacy in the face of public policy, managing ecological and economic transitions, and the national government's appropriate role in each of these areas are also discussed. Another question posed tackles the role that the EU has played and should play in the future.
