GNSS tolling: heaven-sent solution or big brother nightmare?
The use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology for charging and tolling on roads is increasing. It is useful for wide area applications rather than a small number of selected routes because it reduces the amount of infrastructure needed. However, a major issue with GNSS use is privacy. Many individuals who wish to sign up for applications such as navigation services may be unwilling to share positional information with governments for the purpose of toll or road charge collections. Additionally, enforcement for GNSS-based tolling systems would be difficult for large-scale networks. At present, GNSS technology is growing and adapting, even before it has been deployed.
