World's best practice in railway timetable & capacity planning

Developing timetables for railways has always been a difficult and risky business and with recent high levels of growth around the world (particularly for passenger railways), greater expectations from the railways users and an often more fragmented railway organisation, the challenges for timetable designers are ever increasing. This paper provides an investigation into the environment that railways are operating in, with particular reference to timetable and capacity planning to discover the challenges that railways are facing in this area. The processes and techniques used by railways in Australia and throughout the world are also examined to identify world’s best practice in these areas. The railways surveyed included the Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne metropolitan railways in Australia and the Hong Kong, United Kingdom and Switzerland railways overseas.
