Unattended vehicle/track interaction (V/TI) monitoring systems: applied approaches for improving track safety and maintenance planning
With increased demands of rail transport, the challenge of finding and fixing poor track conditions before they cause vehicle damage or derailments is becoming more difficult every day. Railroads throughout the world are turning to new technologies to meet this need—new technologies that enable poor track conditions be detected by revenue service vehicles and reported to the Maintenance of Way (MoW) managers or rail operations managers, indicating the location and severity of problem spots. Over the past five years, North American railroads have rapidly embraced one such technology that provides unattended monitoring of the interactions that take place between the rail vehicles and the track. This paper presents a summary of unattended Vehicle/Track Interaction (V/TI) Monitoring technology employed in North America across high speed, inter-city passenger and freight railroad operations. The paper addresses the technology benefits and provides a profile of how some of the largest railroads in North America have established internal procedures for using data from unattended measurement systems to streamline maintenance and safety initiatives.
