Design development of the millennium train single air spring bogie

The design of the Millennium Train for the State Rail Authority of NSW represents a significant advance in the development of double deck passenger cars. The SRA sought a vehicle that had significant technological advancements and in particular improved passenger comfort, safety, information systems and reliability. This paper describes the design development process employed in the bogie design on the Millennium Train. The paper shows some of the innovative aspects of the design of the Millennium Train bogie, and describes the thorough analysis and test regime employed to ensure that the bogie meets the requirements of the specification. Analysis of the specification requirements indicated that compliance would be difficult to achieve using the conventional two air spring suspension arrangement. A single air spring design concept was developed that provided the ability to separate the vertical suspension from the roll suspension enabling optimum compliance with the specification.
