POLLUTION-FREE TANKERS USE GAS TURBINE PROPULSION
A new type of tankship design, utilizing the concept of a double hull surrounding the cargo tanks, and being propelled by a gas turbine electric propulsion system, is described. The use of a double hull eliminates the necessity of carrying ballast in the cargo tanks, because all ballast is carried in the void space between the skin of the cargo tanks and the outer hull. Through the use of this arrangement, dirty and oily ballast discharge from the ship is completely eliminated. The reasoning behind the use of a gas turbine electric propulsion system is also explained, with areas where savings are realized included in the discussion.
