Is there a future for freight on rail?
This article centers around the GB Freight Route (GBFR), a preferential rail freight route. GBFR has a larger loading gauge that would reinstate or enhance previously under-utilized and disused railway corridors rather than require the building of a new railway. The design of the proposed GBFR would accommodate significant numbers of freight paths and would allow for the transfer of much of the lorry trailer traffic from motorways to rail. The author discusses the potential costs of the GBFR, its proposed terminal locations, its environmental benefits and the importance of a positive government response towards the project.
