Next-level power options
The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emission standard is scheduled to take effect in 2015. Tier 4 requires that diesel engines’ nitrous oxide is reduced by 76% and particulate emissions are reduced by 70%. A great deal of innovation has taken place as locomotive builders work to produce units that will comply with the new standard. Some locomotive manufacturers are developing fuel efficient, environmentally friendly generator set units while others are working with liquefied natural gas technology. Innovation is expected to continue in the new year. This article highlights developments and innovation at six different locomotive manufacturers, looking at their recent activity and projections for the future, as well as the state of the market.
