"Pedestrian Day" Experience in Thimphu, Bhutan
Traffic continues to grow in Thimphu, Bhutan, where there is significant traffic congestion and air pollution. In June 2012, the government established Pedestrian Day (PD), in which every Tuesday would be a vehicle-free day in the central Thimphu area. The public was resistant to the idea, and in November, the government announced that PD would be held on the first Sunday of each month. The whole initiative was eventually withdrawn the following August. The Center for Research Initiatives (CRI) conducted a survey after the PD initiative was first begun and again after it was withdrawn. The surveys showed that both support for the initiative and resistance to it increased between its introduction and withdrawal. The results suggest that a successful implementation of this type of program requires more stakeholder consultations and preparation beforehand.
