STRENGTH OF LARGE TANKERS
The evolution in tanker size and the development of methods of assessing primary structural scantlings are examined. The various aspects of structural strength are considered and the increasing importance of transverse strength criteria discussed. A technique for the assessment of transverse strength by direct calculation is introduced, which illustrates in some measure future trends in the determination of scantlings of all components of tanker structures, and even ship structures in general.
