ESSO NORTHUMBRIA LEAVES TYNE ON TRIALS
The 252,210 ton dw tanker Esso Northumbria will take a complement of some 200 people on her trials, which will culminate in her drydocking in Lisbon. More than 20 of these will be specialists from the British Ship Research Association taking continuous measurements of stresses and deflections of the ship as selected tanks are filled and and emptied, with the aim of checking the efficacy of predictions from new computer programs for structural analysis. Comparisons will also be made with a 1/8 scale model of part of the ships structure. This particular ship has been chosen as the test bed for these trials because of its size and suitability for calculating stresses by the finite-element method. About 600 strain gages have been fitted on the ship and some of these will be monitored in service, for the first years of the vessels life, by an advanced data logging system. Details of the ships arrangement, machinery and cargo handling are given.
